Lisa Loring, an actress beloved for her portrayal of Wednesday Addams in the first live-action adaptation of The Addams Family, passed away on Saturday, January 28th, at the age of 64. Her death came three days following a massive stroke brought on by smoking and high blood pressure. Her daughter stated that “she went peacefully with both her daughters holding her hands.”
The character of Wednesday Addams first ever appeared on screen in 1964, in the television series The Addams Family, which lasted until 1966. The macabre comedy sitcom was based on Charles Addams’ New Yorker cartoons, taking its characters and giving them names and backstories. The series was shot in black-and-white and aired for two seasons, the equivalent of 64 episodes. Lisa Loring, born in 1958, was only six years old when she made her debut as Wednesday in the sitcom.
Born in the United States to parents both serving in the US navy, Lisa grew up in Hawaii and later moved to Los Angeles with her mother, who at that point had gotten a divorce. Loring began modelling at age three and later appeared in an episode of Dr.Kildare, a medical sitcom, which aired in 1964. In 1966, she joined the cast of The Pruitts of Southampton, an attempt by the network to turn the female stand-up comic Phyllis Diller into a sitcom comedienne. From 1980 to 1983, she played the character Cricket Montgomery in As the World Turns, a soap opera. She also appeared in Blood Frenzy in 1987; Iced in 1988; and Savage Harbor in 1987. On top of her roles on screen, she worked as a makeup artist on the set of adult film Traci’s Big Trick. Despite this, she remains most well-known for being the original Wednesday Addams.

Loring married her childhood sweetheart at 15, in 1973, with whom she had a daughter (Vanessa), although the marriage lasted only one year. In 1981, she married a second time to an actor, with whom she had a second daughter (Marianne), until their divorce in 1983. In 1987 she got married to an adult film actor. The marriage lasted until 1992 and was a source of great controversy and public attention. Her final marriage lasted from 2003 to 2014, although they had separated since 2008. Loring passed away unmarried, yet surrounded by family.
