The History behind Valentine's Day

In medieval Europe it was practise to partake in medieval courtship involving poetry like romantic sonnets and an exchange of love letters. This is likely why in modern times it has become custom to celebrate valentine's day by sending cards to people you love. However back then the letters were adorned with calligraphy and tokens such as flowers and small trinckets that represented the writer's love and devotion.
Medieval Europe was also a very religious time. Christians would associate the now holiday with Saint Valentine, a saint who was said to heal those suffering from blindness and lead people with the message of love. Those in medieval times would pray to him in search of finding ones true love.
